Scholarship Competition 2009

Each year the Association of Hispanic Alumni for the University of Florida holds the Gator Guayabera Guateque in Coral Gables, Florida. The event raises money to fund a scholarship program which benefits students attending the University of Florida. There are five different scholarships, each with different criteria.

NOTE: The 2009 award amounts have been revised. Please take note of the new amounts given below.

Juan and Elvia Roig Scholarship

Undergraduate Student Scholarship

The Juan and Elvia Roig’s Scholarship will be awarded in 2008. It honors Mr. Juan Roig (in memoriam) and Mrs. Elvia Roig. The award is given in order to recognize a University of Florida undergraduate who through his or her community service has become a role model to the Hispanic-Latino community.

Rafael and Fe Angulo Scholarships

Undergraduate Student Scholarship

The University of Florida established the Rafael and Fe Angulo Scholarship in 2005. The scholarship honors the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Angulo, who opened their home to Hispanic University of Florida students in the 1960’s. The Rafael & Fe Angulo Awards are merit based scholarships given to recognize seven University of Florida undergraduate students who have excelled in leadership, service and/or academic scholarship and who have made a positive impact on the Hispanic-Latino community.

Graduate Student Scholarship

The University of Florida established the Rafael and Fe Angulo Graduate Scholarship in 2006. The scholarship honors the memory of Mr. and Mrs. Angulo, who opened their home to Hispanic-Latino University of Florida students in the 1960’s. The Rafael & Fe Angulo Graduate Award is a merit based scholarship given to recognize University of Florida undergraduate seniors planning to enroll at UF for graduate studies or graduate students enrolled at UF. Students must excel in leadership, service and/or academic scholarship and who have made a positive impact on the Hispanic-Latino community.

Colonel Glenn A. Farris Scholarships

Undergraduate Student Scholarship

The University of Florida established the Colonel Glenn Farris Scholarship in 2005. The scholarship honors the memory of Col. Farris, who during the 1960s helped hundreds of recently exiled Cubans enter the university and successfully pursue degrees. The Colonel Glenn A. Farris Award is a need and merit based scholarship given to recognize University of Florida undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need, who have excelled in leadership, service, and/or academic scholarship, and have made a positive impact on the Hispanic-Latino community.
