History and Mission

History of the IBC

The Institute of Black Culture (IBC) is an area within the Dean of Students Office, and was established in the Fall of 1971 after students advocated for the university to provide a space that focused on black culture. Today, the IBC serves as a resource for all the members of the university community, providing educational and social programming that focuses on black culture. In addition, the IBC also serves as a support network a for many black students on campus.

Philosophy and Mission

The IBC serves as a resource, providing an educational, social and cultural support system for both students of African descent at the University of Florida and residents of the larger UF community. Persons of all races, cultures, and convictions are welcome to utilize the various programs and services that the IBC has to offer. In order to achieve its goal, the IBC provides programs, lectures, seminars, forums, conferences, study groups, informal discussions, and social functions to aid in the cooperative venture of educating students and the community about the history and cultures of its African descent.
